Easton Axis 5mm Arrow Review

Updated March 2023

Slim, fast and accurate. The Easton Axis 5mm carbon arrow is a highly popular arrow shaft that is made to deliver results. Primarily a hunting arrow, the all-carbon construction of the Easton Axis makes it an incredibly deadly arrow for hunting. In this article, we will take an in-depth look at the Easton Axis 5mm arrow to help you determine if it is the right choice for you.

Micro Diameter

First, what differentiates the Axis from other arrows is its small shaft diameter. What is considered a “micro” diameter arrow, the Axis shaft has a 5mm outside diameter. You’re probably wondering what the advantage of a small diameter arrow is. The smaller the diameter of an arrow results in less horizontal wind resistance, or “drift”. In other words, the smaller diameter helps the arrow cut through wind easier. This assists in delivering pinpoint accuracy down range with higher kinetic energy. What it also does is allow for deeper penetration in a target due to reduced friction and resistance.

Hidden Insert Technology

The Easton Axis’ are also made to be used with Easton’s Hidden Insert Technology (HIT) inserts. These inserts are installed completely inside the shaft of the arrow, resulting in no collar showing on the outside of the arrow. This makes the Axis easy to pull out of bag targets without getting hung up. Easton also has available weighted brass HIT inserts that allow you to create a greater front-of-center (FOC) weight for your arrows. An increased FOC results in greater penetration and kinetic energy. The weighted brass inserts add an additional 75 grains with the option to break a piece off to bring them down to 50 grains. Easton makes these inserts easy to install and adjust on your own with a tool and epoxy that are included with the inserts.

Specifications

With a straightness tolerance of +/-.003 inches, the Axis’ provide consistent accuracy and reliability down range. The Axis’ also come in a wide variety of spine weights ranging from 260-400, making them a great choice for just about any bow. Easton also makes a “match grade” version of the Axis with a tighter straightness tolerance .001” for even greater precision and consistency. Also, the Axis’ come with Easton’s X-nocks preinstalled.

All in all, the Easton Axis’ are a solid arrow for hunting that is both tough and reliable. Small diameter shafts are becoming increasingly popular as they offer increased accuracy and penetration. With more kinetic energy, the Axis’ are specifically designed to punch through thick hide and bone, resulting in shorter blood trails and quicker recoveries. This, combined with a heavier brass insert, makes the Easton Axis a deadly arrow for bowhunters. For related articles, check out other posts from Bowhunting Depot!
