HHA Tetra Sight Review

The HHA Tetra single-pin sight has been hands-down the best sight I have ever used. As someone who predominantly hunts whitetails in the Midwest, I was hesitant at first on moving from my fixed 5-pin sight to the HHA Tetra single-pin. I was used to having all my pins set at 10-yard intervals out to 60 yards. Looking back, I’m glad I made the switch.

The HHA Tetra provides all of the features of a premium sight along with the quality you would expect. When I first shot this sight on my Mathews Vertix, I immediately felt more confident. The ability to dial in the sight to the exact yardage is very convenient. This combined with the small pin diameter provides precision accuracy. I went from just shooting at targets, to being able to pick out a precise spot on the target.

Not only did the HHA Tetra increase my accuracy at close and mid-range, it also gave me more confidence at long-range shooting, far beyond what I would ever hunt at. I always prefer practicing at longer ranges because it emphasizes my mistakes. With this sight, I was able to reliably hit a paper plate at 100 yards.

After putting this sight through two full Illinois public land bow seasons, it continues to work like the day I bought it. Many trips to and from my tree stand in all types of weather including snow and temperatures in the teens, this sight definitely holds up to the test. The only thing I had to replace was the felt arrow rest pad that eventually wore out. I couldn’t find a replacement so I contacted HHA and they send me a new one for free.

I would be lying if I said using this sight didn’t take some time to get used to. As with any serious bowhunter, limiting movement in the stand, especially when a deer is approaching is crucial. It took me some time to get used to adjusting the yardage dial with a deer coming in. It helps being able to anticipate where the deer will go and what shot opportunity you will have while adjusting your dial and attaching your release. Although sometimes difficult to do, this minor challenge is minimal to the benefits of this sight.

Overall, the HHA Sports Tetra single-pin sight is a great choice for anyone who is looking to upgrade their bow setup with a quality sight. This fun sight has made me a better shot by increasing my accuracy and confidence.

With rain in the forecast, many hunters avoid the woods, dreading the thought of getting wet and the discomfort that comes with it. But what happens when you’re on a multi-day hunt and you can’t afford to waste any days not hunting? This is where quality rain gear can make or break a hunt. Quality rain gear allows you stay in the field longer, while other hunters leave to get hot coffee. The longer you can stay dry and comfortable, the better your chances for tagging a trophy animal. On top of this, there are many benefits to hunting in the rain that lead to increased deer movement. This article will cover what to look for in a quality set of rain gear and reviews of some of the best rain gear available.

List of Recommended Rain Gear for Bowhunting

How to Choose Rain Gear and Things to Consider When Purchasing

  • Waterproof vs. Water Resistant – Although they sound the same, there is a considerable difference between waterproof and water-resistant material. Waterproof means that the material is impermeable to water, offering the highest level of protection. Water resistant means that the material is able to resist the penetration of water up to a certain point, but not completely. In short, waterproof is the way to go as it provides 100% dryness. Gore-Tex material is the gold standard of waterproofing and breathability and is guaranteed to keep you completely dry.
  • Weight – Rain gear comes in a variety of thicknesses, weights and insulation levels. If weight and bulkiness is a concern, sticking with a packable rain suit is your best option. A lightweight rain gear set is probably best if you plan on hiking long distances. Alternatively, an insulated rain gear set should be considered if you will be hunting in mostly cold and wet conditions where weight is less of a concern.
  • Breathability – Some rain gear is more breathable than others. Breathability is important to allow moisture to escape when you are sweating so you stay dry underneath. Gore-Tex is a great material that provides 100% waterproofing and is also breathable.
  • Material – It is important to pay attention to the material of rain gear. Some materials are louder and crunchier than others, which is important when you are bowhunting. Material such as polyester is almost completely quiet and will prevent spooking deer.
  • Price – Rain gear varies drastically in price, mostly based on how dry it will keep you. A basic poncho can cost under $20, whereas a full Gore-Tex jacket and pants set comes with a premium price tag and can cost over $500. The good news is that there are options for just about any budget.

Bow maintenance should be at the should remain at the top of every hunter’s priority list. Bow maintenance is one of the lesser talked about subjects, but shouldn’t be. A bow that is not maintained correctly could keep you hitting the woods or even worst, missing or wounding an animal. You may notice your bow sounds or feels different when shooting and could mean something is wrong or is in need of maintenance.

1. Visual Inspection

It’s a good habit to regularly inspect your bow to make sure that everything looks right. Take a close look to ensure that everything is tight and in place. Look closely at all screws, stabilizer, rest, quiver, etc. to make sure everything is snug. It is also a good idea to check the bow’s limbs and riser for any cracks or damage. If needed, use an Allen wrench tool to snug down all bolts and screws. When shooting your bow, pay attention to any changes is sounds that could be caused by loose for broken parts.

2. Bow String

Your bow’s string is the most important maintenance activity you can do. Over time, strings dry out, stretch and fray. When this happens, your bow string will appear “fuzzy” looking. Regularly applying a high-quality bow string wax helps to keep your string from fraying and wearing out prematurely. Make it a habit to wax your strings after every few shooting sessions, or about every 100 shots. To do this, rub wax on the string and use your index finger and thumb to rub in the wax along the string. When waxing your bow string, it is important to avoid waxing the serving of any knots. Wax in these spots can cause serving separation and knots to weaken.

As a rule of thumb, you should replace your bow string every 2-3 years depending on usage. If you’re unsure if your string needs to be replaced, your local archery shop should be able to tell you how much string life you have left. Similar to the string, it is also important to inspect your bow’s cables for any advanced signs of wear.

Your bow’s D-loop is another component of your bow string that is subject to increased wear. Examine your D-loop material for signs of wear or fraying. Your D-loop is placed under a lot of stress each time you shoot your bow. It is generally best practice to replace your D-loop once a year.

3. Lubricate Moving Parts

Your bow has many moving parts and it’s important to keep them all lubricated. Each draw cycle, both of the bow’s cams turn and rotate back to their original positions during each shot. Keeping your cam axles lubricated prevents any squeaks or noises. A quality bow lubricant is good for keeping this parts working properly and reducing any unnecessary friction.

4. Cam Timing

When you draw your bow, both cams should rotate identically throughout the draw cycle. To check this, use a mirror or have someone else watch your cam rotation as you draw back. Each cam should be synchronized and reach the let-off position at the same time. If your cams are not timed correctly, you will most often notice issues with accuracy and you may notice your bow sounds different when shot.

5. Arrows

Even if your bow is properly tuned, you may still experience accuracy issues if there are problems with your arrows. It is recommended regularly inspect your arrows for any damage. Take a close look at each arrow to see if there are any cracks or splintering in the carbon shaft. This is a sign that the arrow is damaged and should be discarded. For more precision arrow testing, an arrow spinner can be used to inspect straightness of each arrow. Inspecting arrow fletchings for any small tears or rips should also not be overlooked.

6. Check Arrow Flight

The best way to ensure that your rest, sight and arrows are all working in-sync is to check your arrow flight by paper tuning your bow. Paper tuning involves shooting arrows through a sheet of paper to ensure that the tip and tail of the arrow are aligned. If you notice fletchings that are tearing large holes through the paper, this often means that your arrows are not flying completely straight. This can easily be remedied by making adjustments to your rest or nocking point on your string.

7. Storage

This important, but often overlooked aspect of bow maintenance, can make a big difference in prolonging the life of your bow and decreasing maintenance costs. It is important to always store your bow in a protective case when not in use. This helps ensure that your bow is not subject to accidental bumps or scratches. When storing your bow, it is recommended to keep it away from moisture and extreme heat. Both of these can cause a bow to rust and cause the string to wear prematurely.

8. Annual Tune-Up

Finally, it’s not a bad idea to bring your bow into your local archery shop once a year to have a professional take a look to make your bow is performing at its best. Many archery shops will charge a minimal fee to perform a “check-up” on your bow. This is well worth the peace of mind that comes with it.

If you feel inclined to tackle some of these maintenance activities yourself, a few helpful tools to make the job easier include a bow vice, bow press and nocking pliers. As you have read above, there are a number of actions you can take on your own to make sure that your bow is operating at its optimal level. Getting to your treestand in the dark can be a challenge, but not if you have adequate light. Whether your field dressing a whitetail or quartering an elk in the pitch black, a headlamp is an essential piece of equipment. With all of the gear you bring into the woods, the last thing you want to do is hold a flashlight. This is where the hands-free operation of a headlamp is a big advantage. If you’re anything like me, a headlamp has been a critical piece of equipment for setting up treestands on public land before sunrise. This article will cover what to consider when choosing a headlamp as well as reviews of some of the best headlamps for hunting.

List of Recommended Headlamps for Bowhunting

  1. Black Diamond Storm 400
  2. Petzl Tactikka Stealth
  3. Princeton Tec Remix
  4. Cabela’s Alaskan Guide XG
  5. Bushnell Pro 400L
  6. Cabela’s Alaskan Guide QUL
  7. Streamlight ProTac HL
  8. Black Diamond Icon 700
  9. Browning Blackout Elite
  10. Ledlenser MH10

How to Choose a Headlamp and Things to Consider When Purchasing

Lumens – When selecting a headlamp, it is important to look at the lumens. Lumens are simply the overall brightness that a light puts out. Anywhere from 300-400 lumens is standard and is plenty bright for most uses. Sometimes it can be good to have more lumens such as for tracking animals in the dark or the need to see further into the distance. Some of the higher powered headlamps offer 600-700 lumens.

Bulb Type – Most headlamps use LED bulbs because they offer superior brightness and use a fraction of the energy from a standard bulb. When looking at headlamps, LED is the way to go. Some headlamps also offer the ability to adjust the focal length of the beam to a wider setting for close up use, or a narrower beam setting for longer use into the distance. Most headlamps also have a tilt feature that allows you to adjust the height of the beam lower to see more of the ground in front of you, or higher to see more down a trail.

Battery Life – Because most headlamp use LED bulbs, battery life tends to be pretty good. Battery life heavily depends on the level of brightness you use. Constantly using a headlamp on the highest brightness setting will severly decrease the battery life. If used mostly on the lowest setting, many headlamps can last up to 100 hours. Most headlamps run on three or four AAA batteries. Some headlamps also use rechargeable battery packs that are be recharged through a USB cable. It is important to note that cold weather, especially freezing temperatures can quickly drain a battery.

Water Resistance – It is best to look for a headlamp that is water resistant. You never know what conditions you will be using the headlamp in, so its best to stick to one that can be used in the rain. Headlamps that are water resistant usually have a rubber gasket seal along the battery compartment that keeps moisture out and the internals dry. This also helps keep out dust. Headlamps that are water resistant are generally more durable and can operate without issues in rain and snow.

Light Colors – Bright white is the main color of most headlamps with LED bulbs. Some headlamps also offer additional light colors such as red, green and/or blue, often referred to as RGB. These alternative colors can be helpful for use at night for not alerting animals to and from your treestand and act as night vision.

Size – Headlamps come in all shapes and sizes. Personally, I have always gravitated toward smaller, lightweight headlamps. Keep in mind that some headlamps are bulkier than others and may stick out further. This may be cumbersome if is you are trying to get through thick brush or areas with dense vegetation.

Every year, bucks drop their antlers, giving deer hunters the opportunity to go out and find them. Shed hunting has become a popular hobby for many hunters for a variety of reasons. The excitement of spotting a recently shed antler on the ground is enough to get your adrenaline going along with the thought of finding more. Shed hunting is also a great way to scout for deer and gain intel on whitetails that made it through the season. This allows you to acquire valuable information on deer behavior, travel patterns and habitat preferences to put together a game plan for next season.

Shed hunting is also another way to enjoy the outdoors after hunting season is over. Looking for pointy trophies on the ground is good exercise and is fun and challenging at the same time. Shed antlers can be used for a wide-range of different things such as wilderness-inspired decorations, crafts, dog toys, additions to a trophy room and much more.

Why Do Bucks Shed Their Antlers?

Deer, elk, moose and caribou all shed their antlers annually. Antlers naturally fall off of a deer’s head due to a decrease in testosterone levels post breading season. Larger, more dominant bucks that do most of the breeding, tend to drop their antlers first compared to lesser bucks. This is due to their overall physical condition after the rut as they are usually more run down. With the rut being over, bucks don’t need antlers anymore to fight off other bucks and show their dominance, so they lose them to make room for a newer, larger pair.

When Do Bucks Shed Their Antlers?

In most cases, bucks shed their antlers during the late winter months and start growing a new pair in the spring. This timeframe varies considerably throughout each region, but is about the same time each year wherever you are. As stated above, antler shedding is largely affected by stress and overall health. Factors that influence this include predation, extreme cold, food availability, etc.

Whitetails can start dropping their antlers in late January. The majority of deer drop their antlers in February and March, and are done by early April. Sever weather and abnormally cold conditions can affect this timeframe by a few weeks. Some western states even have a shed hunting season to reduce stress on animals from human interaction.

When is the Best Time to Shed Hunt?

The best time to shed hunt is a balance of not being too early before antlers have dropped, and not being too late after other people have already picked them up. Antlers that have been laying on the ground for more than a few weeks are quickly chewed by rodents. Also, growing spring vegetation can hide shed antlers and make them harder to see, as well as snow cover. The first big snow melt of the year is one of the best times to look for antlers that have been buried in the snow and are now visible.

Best Places to Find Sheds – Where to Look

  • Travel Routes – Just like searching for a good place to set up a treestand, finding deer travel routes is a great place to start. These high-trafficked areas greatly increase your chances of finding a shed due to the sheer number of deer using these routes. Pay attention to pinch points and areas between food sources and bedding.
  • Bedding – Locating buck bedding areas in search of sheds is another effective strategy. Thickets, tall grass, and densely wooded areas all provide adequate cover for deer. Bucks will frequent these areas, increasing your chances of spotting a shed.
  • Food Sources – Late season food sources are where deer will spend a lot of their time in the winter months. Deer will become concentrated around food sources in winter as they burn more calories to keep their bodies warm. Agriculture fields, food plots and oak stands are good areas to look for sheds. Don’t overlook transition areas around food sources as well.
  • Water Sources – Creeks, river edges, ponds and swamps are great places to find sheds. In addition to drinking water, deer often cross bodies of water in their daily routines. Target these areas by walking along the edge of the water. Sometimes, the few steps to get up the small incline of a creek or river bed is enough to shake an antler lose.
  • South Facing Slopes – In the midst of the winter months, deer can often be found along south facing slopes in order to take advantage of the heat from the sun in order to stay warm. After a few really cold days, make sure to check these areas as deer tend to migrate here to soak up the sun.
  • Thick Timber – In the late season, many deer head to the thick timber. With no leaves left on the trees and limited cover, deer seek out concealment in thick cover where they feel safe. Look for high-trafficked trails leading into thick cover. You might even find a bedding area or two. Deer will also head into thick timber on exceptionally windy days to find cover.
  • Low Areas – Creek bottoms, dips and depressions all provide cover for deer while traveling. These areas help to conceal deer, keeping them out of sight. Natural depressions also shield deer from the wind making them feel more comfortable, particularly in the late winter when there is limited tree canopy cover.
  • Field Edges – Field edges provide cover for deer in open areas. Deer will often travel along field edges rather than crossing a field in the wide open. Walking the edges of fields for sheds can be an effective strategy. Make sure to look 10-20 yards into the woods off of field edges where trails exist.

8 Tips for Finding More Shed Antlers

1. Train Your Eyes – In order to find more sheds, you need to know what you’re looking for. Learn to scan the ground from side to side looking for shiny white spots in the leaves, grass or snow 20-30 yards in front of you. Concentrate on spotting any white glimmer of antler. Over time, your eyes will become accustomed to scanning and looking for white objects that stand out. Many of us are guilty of getting excited and going too fast. Remember to walk slowly and take your time, scanning the ground back and forth.

2. Get Out Early – Finding shed antlers ultimately comes down to timing. It’s always better to be earlier than late when it comes to shed hunting. Not only do you risk other people finding sheds before you on public land, but rodents love to chew on sheds for minerals. In the worst case if you’re too early, you can easily go back to the same spot the next week to check again.

3. Find a Vantage Point – Spotting antlers from an elevated position is often easier than walking on flat ground. Walk to the top of a hill or any other elevated location to get a vantage point. Ridges, trees, logs and truck beds are all easy ways get up and increase your view. If you still have a treestand out, this is another great option. When in an elevated position, use binoculars to scan the ground further out. This will save you the time and energy of walking and you might even spot a shed or two from a distance.

4. Go Deep – If shed hunting on public land, it’s worth your while to look for sheds as far from the parking lot as possible. Chances are that other people have covered the areas closest to access points. Get off the beaten path and follow deer trails, go into thickets or wade through swamps or marshy areas. Go the extra mile and chances are you will see a big payoff.

5. Revisit the Same Areas – Just because you’ve covered an area doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go back. Sometimes, you might just be too early and bucks haven’t dropped their antlers yet. Try again a few days later or next week as your timing may be slightly off. If you know bucks are traveling through a certain area, continue to check it regularly.

6. Areas Where Deer Jump or Cross – Pay attention to places where deer have to jump, cross or duck. Movements from jumping may be enough to pop off a loose shed. Similarly, movements such as ducking under a fallen tree or branches can knock an antler loose. Look for sheds along fence lines, creek crossings, fallen trees across a trail and other spots where deer have to maneuver around an obstacle.

7. Use Trail CamerasTrail cameras are an excellent tool not only for hunting purposes, but for shed hunting also. A great way to know if it’s a good time to shed hunt is to look at pictures of bucks to see if they have dropped their antlers already. Trail cameras can help tremendously to inventory deer and determine if it’s an ideal time to go look for sheds.

8. Use a Dog – Dogs are not only great hiking partners, but they can also be trained to find antlers. Dogs have a great sense of smell and can use their noses to find sheds. Many retrievers and similar breeds pick up on shed hunting easily and can be trained with little effort. If you have a dog, or access to a dog, it’s worth a try to see if they can help you find more sheds.

With the tips provided above, you should be able to find the majority of antlers on a given property by focusing on these high-likelihood areas and using the strategies provided. Shed hunting is a fun activity after hunting season comes to a close and can even help you learn more about your local deer populations. Remember, there is nothing that contributes to shed hunting success more than getting out there, covering ground and logging some miles. Buying a bow case definitely isn’t as fun as picking out a new bow, but finding the right case will pay dividends into the future. After spending substantial money on a new bow, the last thing you may be thinking about is buying a protective case. We’ve all seen guys throw high-end bows into cheap cases and call it a day. The best bow case is one that fits your bow correctly and provides adequate protection. A good bow case allows you to safely transport your bow by preventing damage. This article will cover what to consider when purchasing a bow case, reviews of the best compound bow cases, a list of the top brands, useful bow case accessories as well as budget-friendly bow case options.

How to Choose a Bow Case and Things to Consider When Purchasing

  • Type – There are two main types of bow cases, hard and soft. Hard cases tend to provide the highest level of protection for your bow. The molded plastic or polymer outer shell shields your bow from impacts. On the other hand, soft cases can be just as effective at protecting your bow. Soft cases normally have adequate padding on all sides to cradle your bow safely. Hard cases are usually heavier than soft cases.
  • Size – When looking for the right bow case, you will want to consider the size of your bow. The most important measurement is the overall length, which tends to be slightly greater than the axle-to-axle measurement. Some cases are also wider than others and will allow more room to store your bow with the stabilizer or quiver attached.
  • Features – Some bow cases come with more features than others such as extra storage compartments for accessories, built-in arrow holders, lockability and more. It’s important to consider what features are important to you when picking out a case.
  • Durability – Different bow cases are built with higher-quality standards than others. This directly correlates to a case’s durability. A hard outer-shell construction is important not only for protecting your bow, but for holding up over time. High density foam will also better protect your bow and remain intact for the life of the case.
  • Weather Resistance – If you plan on using your bow in inclement weather conditions, some cases are more weather resistant than others. A bow case with a gasket lining along the closure will do a better job at shielding your bow from the elements. Also, a waterproof gasket seal will help keep moisture and scent from getting into the case.
  • Travel – If you have plans to travel with your bow, some cases are better than others for airlines. Cases such as SKB or Pelican are constructed with a hard polymer outer shell and have high density inner padding made to better absorb impact. Some cases even come with wheels for rolling through the airport. Bow cases designed for air travel usual have TSA standard approval indications on them.
  • Price – Finally, depending on the quality and features of a bow case, prices can range anywhere from $30 to $300+. It all depends on your budget and what your specific needs are.

It seems that tree saddle hunting has recently gained notable popularity as a competitor to traditional treestands among whitetail hunters. So, what exactly is all the hype about? Hunters are now beginning to realize the many advantages of hunting from a tree saddle and the application saddles have to various hunting situations. This article will cover what a tree saddle is, how to use a tree saddle and advantages of hunting from a tree saddle.

What is a Tree Saddle?

In simple terms, a tree saddle is comparable to a mesh hammock that you sit in. It is worn like an electrical lineman’s belt with a rope looped around the tree that you lean back into in a semi-seated or standing position. For example, the Hawk Helium or XOP-Xtreme Saddle System tree saddles are popular saddles trusted by numerous bowhunters. Most saddle hunters affix a small platform or ring of steps to the tree for their feet, allowing for increased maneuverability and 360-degrees of shot opportunities.

How to Use a Tree Saddle

Now that you know what a tree saddle is, it’s important to know how to use one. The basic components of a tree saddle system are the saddle, lineman’s rope, bridge rope, tether and platform. Each of these pieces are interrelated and work together in climbing a tree and securing yourself in a tree. The first step is to put on the saddle which has pockets containing the lineman’s rope and bridge rope. Next is climbing the tree.

Some hunters prefer to climb up the tree simply using the lineman’s rope, whereas other prefer to use climbing sticks or screw-in tree steps to get up to their desired height. Either method is effective and comes down to your comfort level. Once in the tree, you attach your bridge rope to the saddle’s tether and then wrap it around the tree. Now you can attach and position your platform to the tree for standing or leaning on. Once positioned to your desired spot in the tree, utilizing a gear strap or a mobile bow hanger makes access to all your gear conveniently in front of you.

The Hunting Public has a helpful video explaining how a tree saddle is used with visual demonstrations:

5 Advantages of Hunting from a Tree Saddle

1. Lightweight Design – First and foremost, tree saddles are incredibly lightweight compared to traditional hang on stands or climbers, with most tree saddles weighing in at around 2 pounds. Their lightweight design makes them easier to transport and carry in the field. This makes tree saddles a great minimalist option for hunters hiking in far distances, by allowing them to go further with less weight in gear. Also, a lot of saddle hunter put on their lineman’s belt at their vehicle and walk to their hunting spot with it on, leaving less gear than needs to be carried.

2. Mobility – Tree saddles rate high in the mobility category for their general versatility. For those whitetail hunters that are constantly on the go, or regularly hunt public land, tree saddles are great for quickly moving your setup or adapting to various situations. There is nothing more frustrating than getting set up in a tree and seeing deer traveling down a trail just out of range. This is where the fast and quiet mobility of a saddle comes in handy by allow you to quicky move closer to where the deer are. Similarly, many hunters find that tree saddles open up a wider array of tree choices to hunt from. Smaller diameter trees that may not work for a hang on stand or a climber are now an option with a tree saddle.

3. Maneuverability – One of the biggest advantages of hunting from a tree saddle is the nearly 360-degree shooting opportunities. Compared to traditional treestands where the trunk of the tree blocks shots directly behind you, tree saddles allow hunters to swivel, pivot and swing in almost all different directions to allow for just about any shot direction.

Also, by carrying less bulk on your back, you are able to maneuver through the woods and thick areas more efficiently. This can be cumbersome with a traditional treestand on your back. With a saddle, you are able to get into thickets where the big bucks live with less resistance. Finally, transporting, setting up and using a tree saddle is quieter than a traditional treestand. There are no metal parts that can banged or clanked around creating unwanted noise

4. Concealment – Another useful advantage of hunting from a tree saddle is the concealment factor. Compared to a traditional treestand where you are sitting out in front of the tree, a tree saddle creates less of a side profile of your body. By sticking out less and remaining tighter to the tree, you reduce the chance of deer picking you off.

5. Comfort – One of the most common questions asked by hunters considering a tree saddle is “how comfortable are tree saddles?” The sling-style hammock-shaped seat is fairly comfortable for most whitetail hunters. For all day sits, tree saddles make shifting your position and body weight easy in order to maintain comfort. Most saddles are made to be adjusted effortlessly to fit the user and to reduce any pressure points. Some saddle manufacturers even sell back/lumbar support attachments.

Aside from comfortability, may hunters find themselves questioning the safety of hunting from a tree saddle. This is a valid concern as climbing up a tree with a small fabric saddle may feel dangerous. The reality is that tree saddles are relatively safe compared to traditional treestands. Once up in a tree, you are secured by both a lineman’s rope and a tether. It may be frightening at first leaning out and away from the trunk of the tree, but you will soon get used to it and learn to trust your saddle.

As you have read, there are many distinct advantages of hunting whitetails from a tree saddle compared to a traditional treestand. Their lightweight design, mobility, maneuverability, concealment and comfort all add the many reasons why more and more hunters are turning to tree saddles to go further and get into places traditional treestands can’t. Nothing excites bowhunters more than an incoming cold front. Any experienced hunter will tell you that this is the best time to be in the stand because deer will be on their feet. Major temperature drops have historically correlated with increased daylight deer activity. By why is this? This article will help you understand why deer activity increases during periods of cold temperatures.

Expect Increased Deer Movement in Cold Weather

There is plenty of data out there that shows the relationship between deer activity and temperature. Big buck hunters know this. What it comes down to is that deer are more comfortable in colder weather. They have built-up fat reserves and high-density fur coats that act as an insulating winter coat. Imaging wearing your winter jacket when its 60 degrees out. Conversely, on unusually warm days, deer act lethargic as they overheat with minimal movement.

In extreme cold temperatures, whitetails burn more calories as their bodies work to produce more heat to stay warm. This requires deer to eat and consume more calories than normal, and is why in colder than normal conditions, deer seem to be out foraging for food or coming to food plots. There are also some theories that deer walk around more during periods of extreme cold just to stay warm. This makes late season whitetail hunting a productive time to be in the woods as the rut winds down and deer go back to their normal patters. Late December and January are great times for tagging a mature buck due to the cold temperatures.

Cold, bright, clear days with moderate wind are some of the best days to be in a treestand. As you get into the later phases of deer season when the rut is mostly over, evenings become a more productive time to hunt than mornings. On very cold days, many deer will gravitate to south facing slopes of terrain where they can be in direct sunlight for added warmth. Cold temperatures also usually correlate with snowfall, which can be great for tracking and patterning deer behavior.

Hunting Cold Fronts

Monitoring the weather for incoming cold fronts is a wise strategy for killing big bucks. Any serious buck hunter knows that a temperature drop of 10 degrees or more in daytime high temperature is a good sign. Sudden temperature drops have historically resulted in increased daylight deer activity, especially in October and November. So, what do cold temperatures actually have to do with deer movement? Ask any serious mature buck hunter and the answer is clear, cold temperatures get deer on their feet! Deer burn more calories during periods of cold weather and will be on their feet looking for food. If you’re up for braving cold weather conditions, this can be an excellent time for arrowing a mature whitetail. For related articles, check out other posts from Bowhunting Depot!

Cold wet feet are a hunter’s demise. Keeping your feet warm and dry on a hunt is vital for logging long hours in the stand during deer season. Popular among deer hunters in the Midwest, rubber boots have become an essential for serious hunters. Rubber boots are great for keeping your feet dry and warm, while also locking in human odor. This article will discuss the benefits of rubber boots for hunting and well as some of the best products and brands available.

Why Wear Rubber Boots for Hunting?

Many hunters choose to wear rubber boots because of their ability to keep your feet dry. Tall rubber boots provide peace of mind that you can take on any terrain that lies in front of you. This makes rubber boots perfect for crossing creeks and trekking through marshy areas. Rubber hunting boots are also superior to normal boots in terms of scent control by concealing human odor inside. Rubber boots also come in various levels of insulation. 800 grams of insulation is a middle-of-the-road insulation level that are great for all season use, whereas 1,600 grams in more for colder conditions. 400 grams of insulation is typically best for more mild temperatures.

One of the drawbacks of rubber boots is that they do not allow your feet to breath, leading to sweaty feet. This is great for keeping in warmth, but when you are walking long distances, your feet will perspire with nowhere for the moisture to go. To combat this, many hunters rely on Merino wool socks to wick away moisture and keep your feet dry and warm. A few good pairs of Merino wool socks are the RealTree Heavyweight Merino Wood Socks or the Darn Tough Merino Wool Boot Socks.

Any hunter that has been hitting the woods long enough has used attractant scents at one time or another. Or maybe you’re just starting out and are wondering if deer scents are as effective as the manufacturers say they are. The concept of using deer scent is simple, to entice curiosity and draw in deer close enough to get a shot. This article will cover how deer communicate via scents, types of deer scents, some of the best scent products available and tips for using deer scents.

Deer Communication 101 – Smell

Smell is one of the most important senses for deer. This is because deer have noses that are so sensitive, that they can smell scents that the human nose cannot. This is why deer can smell a threat before they see it and reaffirms why scent control is essential in the pursuit of mature whitetails. Deer use different scents to communicate various messages to one another such as readiness to breed, territorial markings and asserting dominance. In most cases, scents are secreted from glands or urine of whitetail deer.

The market is saturated with many different types of deer attractants in the form of various scents. There are a variety of deer scents use by hunters at different times of the season and for different purposes. Understanding how deer communicate via scent is important in determining what scent product is best for you where you hunt. Does and bucks both use various bodily fluids and glands to communicate to other deer.

Types of Deer Scents and What They Mean

  • Doe Urine – Doe urine is a common scent used in the early season, pre-rut and late season. The early season is when bucks start becoming more interested in does and will seek out areas where they can smell doe urine such as bedding areas. Bucks can tell doe urine from buck urine because of the pheromones.
  • Doe Estrus – Doe estrus is urine from “hot” does or does that are ready to breed. Does that are in estrus are what all bucks are searching for during the rut. When a doe is in heat, this estrus scent is released through urine, telling bucks she is ready to breed. Doe estrus products are some of the most popular scents because of their effectiveness in attracting bucks during the rut.
  • Buck Urine – Buck urine is used as a display of dominance and to mark territory. When a buck makes a scrape on the ground, they will often pee in it to tell other bucks that this is his area and to stay out. Making a mock scrape and filling it with buck urine tells bucks that there is a competitor that needs to be dealth with.
  • Buck Tarsal Gland – Similar to buck urine, tarsal glands are another scent used by bucks to communicate dominance and territory. The tarsal gland is located on the inside of the tarsus joint, near the rear ankle/knee area. During the rut, bucks will pee on their tarsal glands to release a musky scent in the air. Tarsal glands can be seen as dark tufts of fur on a buck’s rear legs.
  • Buck Forehead Glad – A whitetail’s forehead scent glands are located above its eyes to behind its ears. In the process of creating rubs and scrapes, bucks will also deposit their forehead gland scent on branches and trees in an attempt to mark their territory. As Dr. Leonard Rue III says in his book, Whitetail Savvy, he has observed “bucks rub their forehead scent on twigs, branches, and saplings at all times of the year – but gently, except during the rutting season, when they rub more vigorously.”

Tips for Using Deer Scents

  • Place Scent Downwind – It is best to place scent on the downwind side of you while hunting, especially if you are hunting from the ground. Not only do attractants act as a cover scent, but you won’t be stuck smelling deer urine while hunting.
  • Use the Correct Scent at the Correct Time – Being smart about what scents to use during the different times of the deer season is essential. Using an estrus scent in early October will most likely scare off bucks as this is an unusual smell during that time of the deer.

As you have learned, smell plays a large part in deer communication and behavior. Using a quality deer attractant can prove to be an effecting strategy for bringing in mature bucks. Experiment with a few different types of scents for yourself to see if you get results. For related articles, check out other posts from Bowhunting Depot!
