Mechanical broadheads have long been debated by bowhunters everywhere. At Bowhunting Depot, we have tried and tested many different mechanical broadheads over the years. One broadhead brand that has really stood out to us is Grim Reaper and their Whitetail Special front deploying mechanical broadheads. Because of their effectiveness and field tip like flight, there is a reason why these broadheads are one of our favorites. This review is going to focus on the Whitetail Special razor tip 3-blade broadhead by Grim Reaper.

Front Deploying – The Whitetail Special broadheads have a front deploying mechanism in which the 3 blades open and fold back, similar to peeling a banana. Grim Reaper’s blade retention system has enclosed springs that keep the blades tightly closed until contact and penetrate upon impact. These broadheads come equipped in either a razor tip or razor cut tip for ultimate penetration depth. The three blades open up in a triangle pattern and provide a 2-inch cutting diameter. Once opened, the three blades spring into place to prevent them from closing back up. Unlike many rear deploying broadheads, there is no aggravating rubber O-ring or plastic retainer to keep track of.
Field Tip Flight – One of out favorite features of the Whitetail Special broadheads are their field tip-like flight. The low profile blades lay flat for minimal arrow flight interference. Like many other hunters who have struggled with fixed-blade broadhead flight, the Whitetail Special is a refreshing alternative. With their aerodynamic shape, they have limited drag when flying through the air resulting in greater accuracy. These broadheads are 100 grains and maintain the speed and accuracy of field tips. The Whitetail Specials are designed to be shot from high kinetic energy bows. One added bonus of these broadheads is that they come with an extra practice broadhead for target practice.
Razor Tip – The tip on the Whitetail Special is made of mini razor tipped blades built from durable high quality 44 stainless steel made in the USA. The bone splitting razor tip is designed for chiseling through bone which is followed by the 3 deployed blades. This deadly combination provides ultimate lethality on each shot.
Blood Trails – Unlike anything we have seen from other mechanical broadheads, the Whitetail Special creates unbelievable blood trails for quick expiration and short tracking jobs. The entry and exit holes caused by these broadheads are some of the largest we have seen. Because of the wide diameter blades, you may not always get a pass through but the blades continue doing damage while the animal is running after the shot.

Overall, the Whitetail Specials are a great mechanical broadhead for whitetail deer and are suitable for just about any size game.
